Thanksgiving, Black Friday and Ciber Monday

THANKSGIVING is a national holiday celebrated on various dates in the United States, Canada, Grenada, Saint Lucia, Liberia,
and unofficially in countries like Brazil and the Philippines.
It is also observed in the Dutch town of Leiden and the Australian territory of Norfolk Island.

Thanksgiving is celebrated on the second Monday of October in Canada and on the fourth Thursday of November in the United States.

It began as a day of giving thanks for the blessing of the harvest and of the past year.
Americans generally believe that their Thanksgiving is modeled on a 1621 harvest feast shared by the English colonists (Pilgrims) of Plymouth.

VOCAB: gratitude / grateful / abundance / harvest / feast / blessing / reunion / leftovers

Do you have a similar festival in your country?

What food is associated with Thanksgiving?

(Typical food: turkey, potatoes (usually mashed or sweet), squash, corn (maize), green beans, cranberries (typically as cranberry sauce), and pumpkin pie.)

Would you rather help to prepare a Thanksgiving dinner at home or go out to a really nice, fancy restaurant?

What are you thankful for?

What have you done this year that you are especially proud of?

BLACK FRIDAY

the Friday after Thanksgiving in the United States. This year it's Friday 24th.

It’s not about businesses closing the year in the back instead of being in the red and losing money.

Police in Philadelphia in the 1960s complained about an influx of people coming to the city to shop the day after Thanksgiving, calling it a “Black Friday” because they had to control crowds at a football game. From there, the term was used to describe shopping on that day and gained momentum with each passing year.

VOCAB: Discounts / Bargains / Deals / Shopping spree / Markdowns / Limited stock / Shopping frenzy / Haul / Brick-and-mortar retail

Why do some people get excited about Black Friday? Do you?

Do you think Black Friday is a good thing or a bad thing? Why?

Are you a bargain hunter? Do you get excited about Black Friday and other sales?

If you had a free plane ticket to anywhere in the world, where would you most like to go shopping?

If you could open a shop, what would you most like to sell?

Cyber Monday is a marketing term for the Monday following the Thanksgiving holiday. It falls on the first Monday after Thanksgiving, and it is considered to be an online counterpart to Black Friday.
