1.

- Have you been to Amsterdam before?
- No, this is my first time in Holland. I’m having a great time. What do you do, by the way?
- I’m in human resources. I handle recruitment for our European offices.
- Really? Can I get you a drink?
- Yes, thank you. I’ll have a small beer. I’m Frank by the way.
- Peter, nice to meet you.
---------------------(pause)--------------------------------
- Here you are.
- Thanks.
- So, where are you based?
- Our head office is in London. What line of business are you in?

2.

- Hello. Is anyone sitting here?
- No, be my guest.
- Thank you. It’s so busy here today.
- Yes, it is. How are you enjoying the conference?
- It’s been very nice so far. The talks have been interesting, and the food is certainly better than last time. Did you come last year?
- No, this is my first time actually.
- I’m David Williams, Sun Life.
- Jenny Harrison, Royal Exchange.
- Nice to meet you. Would you like some red wine?
- Yes, thank you. So, how long have you been with Sun Life?

3.

- Excuse me, but have we met somewhere before?
- No, I don’t think so. I’m Simon Jackson.
- I’m Carol. Nice to meet you. Are you staying here?
- No, I’m meeting a colleague here in a few minutes. We’re here for the Vodafone conference.
- Oh, that’s what it is! I thought it was a Star Trek fan club convention or something. Everyone’s walking around with electronic gadgets, palms and mobile phones with flashing lights.
- Yes, I suppose it seems a bit strange. Are you here on business?
- No, I’m on holiday with a friend. We’re here to eat, drink and shop!
Sounds great, I wish I had time to join you. Would you like another glass of wine while you’re waiting for your friend?
- Yes please, that would be lovely!

4.

- How was lunch?
- Very nice actually. I didn’t see you in the restaurant.
- No, I went out with a couple of guys from the Dublin office. We wanted to try some of the local beers.
- I thought you looked a bit red. Are you okay to give your talk?
- Oh yes, I only had two or four. I feel very relaxed now. My nerves have completely disappeared.
- I’m not surprised.
- Would you excuse me for a moment, I’ll be right back.
- Oh dear!
