Part One
(music) Hello and welcome to Take A Break. This week we have Sam in the studio and he’s going to tell us about two summer break possibilities. Hello Sam, what have you got to tempt us with today?

Hello Jane. Well, for those listeners who are interested in putting their feet up and doing next to nothing for two weeks we have a relaxing break in Cancun, Mexico. And, for the more active, we recommend Laos which is quickly becoming one of the top destinations for eco-tourism.

What exactly is eco-tourism, Sam?

Eco-tourism involves taking tourists away from established holiday destinations to places which are much less frequented. Eco-tourism is, unfortunately, an overused term which is being exploited by many unprofessional travel companies in order to make more money. What eco-tourism really stands for is responsible travel to natural areas which conserves the environment and improves the welfare of local people.

Part Two

What can we expect to find in Cancun, Sam?

Well, the Cancun Royal is the newest all inclusive resort to hit Cancun's hotel zone. All inclusive means you don’t need to pay for anything extra. Food, drink, entertainment and services are all included in the price of the holiday. This luxury resort has been awarded a 5-Diamond rating by AAA and is set on a private beach with a kilometre of glorious white sand. All air conditioned rooms have wifi Internet connection, colour TV, jacuzzi and private balconies. There are five top class restaurants, four bars, three indoor tennis courts, spa facilities, three swimming pools and a special children’s entertainment program and babysitting service.

So, Mum and Dad can relax by the pool while the kids are entertained by experienced staff.

Exactly, Jane.

And how much can we expect to pay, Sam?

Well, it’s a new resort and there’s a special promotional price of 800 euros per week until May 30th, and that’s for the whole package. It’s a good time of year now to go to Cancun, before the intense summer heat and tropical storms.

Wow! That sounds like a very good deal. The Laos break, by contrast, is quite different, isn’t it?

It certainly is, Jane. Our Laos break to Luang Namtha offers the adventurous traveller a chance to see untouched natural areas of beauty such as green highland forests, fog filled valleys, jungle waterfalls, wild rivers and mountain villages. You can meet local villagers, have a picnic with food collected from the forest and observe wildlife in the jungle. The beautiful Nam Ha National Protected Area is an ASEAN Heritage Site.

Activities available include kayaking, rafting, mountain biking, trekking and climbing. You could also take a trip on the Namtha River, one of the last wild rivers in Southeast Asia.

Accommodation is provided by the Green Boat Guest House, an award winning eco-lodge situated in the heart of the Luang Namtha hills. The guest house is built from local materials and offers full board, hot water, single or double rooms and experienced local guides.

The Guest House works closely with local villagers to ensure that they benefit financially and can conserve their environment. The money from your tour not only benefits the villagers, it also goes to strengthening the management of the Nam Ha National Protected Area, so you can be sure that a part of your holiday money is helping the local inhabitants and protecting the environment.
Luang Namtha is the birthplace of eco-tourism in Laos and has greener tourism than anywhere else in the country.
This 14-day Laos experience costs 1,700 euros per person, and includes airport transfer, full board, travel insurance and local guide. Activities are extra.

Thank you Sam, next week Take A Break looks at city breaks in Oslo, Prague and Paris. (music)
